Deciphering Solar Magnetic Activity: The Solar Cycle Clock

چکیده

The Sun’s variability is controlled by the progression and interaction of magnetized systems that form 22-year magnetic activity cycle (the “Hale Cycle”) as they march from their origin at ?55° latitude to equator, over ?19 years. We will discuss end point progression, dubbed “terminator” events, our means diagnosing them. In this paper we expand on Extended Solar Cycle framework construct a new solar “clock” which maps all onto single normalized epoch based terminations Hale Magnetic Cycles. Defining phase 0*2 ? clock Terminators, then polar field reversals occur ? 0.2*2 , geomagnetically quiet intervals centered around minimum start 0.6*2 terminator, thus lasting 40% length. At onset quiescence, “pre-terminator,” Sun shows radical reduction in active region complexity and, like terminator associated with time when radio flux crosses F10.7 = 90 sfu. use terminator-based illustrate range phenomena further emphasize strong global-scale Cycle: vast majority, 96%, X-flares happen between Terminator pre-Terminator. addition X-rays violent flares, rapid changes number energetic photons—EUV spectral emission hot corona flux—impinging atmosphere are predictable Terminator-normalized unit cycle, has implications for improving fidelity atmospheric modelling.

Deciphering Solar Magnetic Activity: Spotting Solar Cycle 25

We present observational signatures of solar cycle 25 onset. Those signatures are visibly following a migratory path from high to low latitudes. They had starting points that are asymmetrically offset in each hemisphere at times that are 21–22 years after the corresponding, same polarity, activity bands of solar cycle 23 started their migration. Those bands define the so-called “extended solar ...

Deciphering solar magnetic activity: on grand minima in solar activity

The Sun provides the energy necessary to sustain our existence. While the Sun provides for us, it is also capable of taking away. The weather and climatic scales of solar evolution and the Sun-Earth connection are not wellunderstood. There has been tremendous progress in the century since the discovery of solar magnetism—magnetism that ultimately drives the electromagnetic, particulate, and eru...

The 22-year Solar Magnetic Cycle. Ii. Flare Activity

This paper is part of a larger set concerning the study of the last Hale cycle, a cycle that had an unexpected behaviour. Here we analyze the occurrence of the solar flares registered in X-ray as well as in Hα, with the aim to find an explanation for the activity much lower than predicted of the current 11-year solar cycle. We conclude that it could be determined by a pulse of flare activity in...

Sources of solar wind over the solar activity cycle

Fast solar wind has been recognized, about 40 years ago, to originate in polar coronal holes (CHs), that, since then, have been identified with sources of recurrent high speed wind streams. As of today, however, there is no general consensus about whether there are, within CHs, preferential locations where the solar wind is accelerated. Knowledge of slow wind sources is far from complete as wel...

Meridional Circulation and the Solar Magnetic Cycle

The Sun’s magnetic cycle manifests itself in an year periodic variation in the number of sunspots seen on the solar surface and a periodic reversal in the polarity of its large-scale magnetic fields. Exploring the origins of this magnetic cycle can unravel the physical mechanisms at work in the interior of magnetized stars like the Sun. Such studies are also important for understanding how the ...
